Handpiece

A device used by the dentist to perform most procedures.

Hemorrhage

A collection of a large amount of blood in the tissue.

Hemostasis

To stop the escape of blood from the body.

Hyperplasia

The overgrowth of tissue.

Hypersensitivity

Pain caused in teeth when exposed to hot, cold, or mechanical elements.

Immediate denture

A full/complete denture made before all of the teeth are removed.  This type of denture is created if you can’t go long without missing teeth, i.e. if you are a TV personality or deal with the public often.

Impacted tooth

A tooth that hasn’t appeared in the mouth yet.  This indicates that something is wrong or something is blocking the tooth from coming in.

Implant

An appliance that is surgically placed in the jaw bone (often looks like a screw).  Then a crown/cap is placed on the screw.  This is used to replace a missing tooth.

Impression

When a mold or replication is taken of your mouth.  The dentist loads a tray with a putty like material, then places it in your mouth to capture the form and structure of your teeth.

Incisal

The chewing edge or cutting surface of the front teeth

Incisor

The front teeth.  Four upper and four lower teeth.

Inlay

A restoration, that is usually sent off to the lab, placed on the tooth.

Interproximal

Refers to the location between two teeth.

Intraoral

Meaning within the mouth.

Invisalign

A system used to move teeth.  Much like braces except it doesn’t involve metal brackets and wires.  It consists of clear trays that gradually move teeth.

Irrigation

To rinse or wash out.

The mandible.

Labial

The front surface.  For example the surface of the tooth that faces the outside/the cheek.

Laminate veneer

A type of restoration that is bonded to the front of the teeth.  It is used to make the teeth appear more “aesthetically appealing”.

Lateral

Refers to the side position

Lesion

A wound or local interruption of normal tissue

Lingual

Refers to the back surface of teeth or the side closes to the tongue

Local anesthesia

Refers to anesthesia that produces a temporary loss of sensation or feeling in a specific area.
